Keeper of the year 2008?
By: Matthew | August 24th, 2008A keeper can only do so much for his team and we are aware of Buffon’s ability. Whether you argue against him or for him I think you have to be pretty daft to say he’s not amazing. I’m very curious though, to see if he will be able to retain his IFFHS keeper of the year award. I think just like last year but probably even more so, he’s going to have strong competition from both Cech and Casillas for the top spot for 2008.
Cech had a pretty solid year with Chelsea. Yeah he made messed up in Euro but I think you should have like a get out of jail free card. I like Cech though, I think he’s brilliant but I feel his head injury holds him back. That’s just opinion but after suffering something like that it’s hard to believe you’re going to be right back to 100%

I feel the strongest competition will be from Casillas this year. The Real Madrid keeper helped Real win La Liga the past 2 years. He was the first keeper-captain to win the Euro. He’s only 27 and pretty much in his prime.
He was good at Euro but I didn’t think he was too busy a lot of the time. Yeah, he saved two shots, versus Buffon’s 1, in PK against Italy and guessed the right way every time. Looks pretty good in all honesty.

Buffon’s year included back pains and third place finish. I would be lying if I said he wasn’t on top of his game for the most part. He made an unforgettable save against Mutu at Euro, keeping the nation alive and reminding everyone why he’s number 1. He’s 30 years old and has still got it but will it be enough? You tell me.
By the way, Roberto asked a good question. How much do guys think he could possibly be worth on the transfer market or rather do you believe he’d be worth more or less than his initial transfer to Juve?

Right now alot less, my guess would be around 15 mil.
Don’t forget about Van der Sar, he was outstanding last year both for club and country.

You’re right Adam. Van der Sar probably had one of his best years ever last season. I’ve never been a huge fan but after taking a real good look at him, I can say I was wrong for doubting him.
Júlio César has also been top notch but I’m not sure how far it will go.
I listed Cech because and Casillas because they both won awards themself, Cech European Football Goalkeeper of the year and Casillas all the listed above.

Nobody will ever get a record Buffon have on WC 06. Surely this isn’t one of his brightest years but who could ever forget his Mutu’s penalty save. not mentioning the penalty save against cheating Koreans in 2002. Buffon is the one with an undisputed ability to keep his team alive in the most pressured times.
